They tried going north-eastward again for two days, hoping to throw him off. He did not appear. It was almost as though he knew they were headed away from the border again. They went south to avoid Innsbruck and headed for the Brenner Pass. At Stafflach they paused at the Weisser Hirsch, where the proprietor was one of the links in the far-flung chain of the system.
