" At these words, all his family wept ; they embraced for the last time : he presented his head to the family of the Chocktaws, survivors of the deceased, which they accepted, and having laid himself upon the trunk of a tree, they cut off his head at the first stroke with a hatchet. This settled the quarrel ; ( 105 ) but, they would not give the offending Indian his father's head. Upon taking it up after it was severed from the bo- dy, he said, '^ pardon me thy death, and remember me in the country of spirits.
