When they heard of this, Leo the pope, with all the assembly of the bishops, priests, and abbots, the senate of the Franks, and all the elders of the Romans, with the rest of the Christian people, held a council, and decided that they ought to give to Charles, the king of the Franks, the name of emperor, inasmuch as he held Rome, the mother of the empire, where the Caesars and the emperors always used to sit, and lest the heathens should mock the Christians if the name of emperor had ceased among them.
