The summer of 1858 was exceedingly unpropitious for this institution. The farm was new
...and stumpy. They had under- taken to raise a considerable amount of grain, but the weather was unpropitious, early and late.
During the summer, 100 acres of heavy timber land were cleared and logged, stumps extracted, tile laid through quick- sands, in all which labor the students participated. They also had charge of the stock, the buildings, and waited on the tables. In addition to this, it was attempted to establish a grand Univer- sity, in which the entire general range of human knowledge was to be taught.
