General Paine, one of the Puri- tan syndicate, feeling sure that Puritan could be improved upon, which feeling was shared by the yacht's designer, placed an order with Edward Burgess for a new sloop, somewhat larger than Puritan, of which he was to be the sole owner. From an unknown local designer, with a dingy back office up three flights of stairs (it was said that Burgess and his brother set up in business in 1883 with a drawing board, a T square and a few drawing instruments), Burgess at once took rank among the foremost naval architects of this country and his name was known from coast to coast and throughout the yachting world 156 THE "AMERICA'S" CUP RACES of Europe.
