To his colony came not alone the unfortunate debtors who by thousands were yearly confined to the pest-breeding dungeons of Fleet prison, Newgate, and Old Bailey, but also the poor persecuted Salzbur- RELIGIOUS LIBERTY 245 gers, and some of the ill-fated Jews who had escaped the fangs and fires of the Inquisition in Spain and Portugal.
