How this nerve affects the sense of taste, and the various exi)eriments which have been recorded concerning it, will be found by reference to preced- ing pages.* If the lesion of the facial nerve be situated behind the ganglionic enlargement from which the three j)etrosal nerves arise, the patient will reveal a depression of the arch of the palate ui)on the affected side ; thus, it will be seen to hang lower than the healthy side, and to approach a straight line along its free edge, rather than that of a marked curve, as in health.
