To the science of the Arabs we have been, and are still, greatly indebted. They are the medium through which we received numerical characters,* as well as algebra and trigonometry.
They appear to have, derived their knowledge of these subjects from the Hindoos; but it was by means of an Arab treatise that algebra was introduced into Europe. A complete and able translation of this work, by Dr. Rosen, was pub- lished, with the original Arabic, in 1831.
