St. Coelan, a monk of this abbey, flourished about the end of the seventh century or beginning of the eighth ; he wrote the life of St. Brigid in Latin verse, in which he expressly asserts that this abbey was a convent of Benedictines. In a.d. 1027, the great Brian Barombh, monarch of Ireland, erected the church of Inis- keltair fiibout this time.
