The invention and compo- sition are quite characteristic of him. An excellent small copy of Hogarth's great portrait of Captain Coram, made by VV. R. Bigg, R. A. , shows Hogarth at his best in this branch of art. Reynolds is represented by his Miss Meyer as Hebe — not the original picture, but a small replica made for the engraver; Romney by a good half-length of Sir Brian Broughton-Delves ; Ozias Humphry by a •seated full-length of Lady Barbara Ashley Cooper, his last exhibited oil portrait ; ...and Zoffany by his well- known picture of Garrick and Mrs. Pritchard in Mac- beth : the erring thane of Cawdor very smartly got up in a Georgian costume for the murder of Duncan. There is a somewhat different version in the Garrick Club, but this is the engraved picture. Hoppner's half-length of Edmund Ayrton, Mus. Doc, is in his best manner, and Lawrence is represented well by his three-quarter length portrait of the Duke of Wellington. The illustrations of our landscape art do not start from the earliest possible period : Wilson and Gains- borough are absent, and the record begins with two Scotsmen — William Anderson, and Alexander Nas- myth, immortalised by his portrait of Robert Burns, but also worthy of remembrance as the pioneer of Scottish landscape.
