What reading level is The Art of Taxidermy book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:

When first introduced, it was claimed that formaldehyde (known also as formalin, formol, formolose, etc.) would effectually preserve the col- our of immersed animal forms. It is now a well-estab- lished fact that formaldehyde will discharge the colours of fish, reptiles, etc., even more rapidly than alcohol. ♦ See Artistic and Scientific Taxidermy and Modellin...g, by Mon- tagu Browne ; Adam & Charles Black, London, 1896, p. 26. Digitized by Google COMPOSITIOI^rS AND FORMULA. 69 MoUusks, echinoderms, etc., should never be placed in formalin, as the free acid decomposes the calcareous por- tions, and thus changes the form and colour of the speci- men. Furthermore, formaldehyde is anything but a pleas- ant medium to work in, the liquid literally tanning the fiugers and the gas irritating the eyes and nose to such an extent as to be positively unbearable, and unhealthful to such a degi'ee as in time to produce chronic catarrh.
