Though he mentions the Grail with almost enough reverence to make possible such intention, there is no direct statement to that effect. The nearest approach to it is in the information which the hermit uncle gives Perceval about the GraU, saying that it is a very holy vessel. Nor does its Christian significance appear in the Welsh story of Peredur,^ which is so nearly related to Chretien...'s poem that the Welsh author must have been familiar either with Chretien's work itself, or with its principal source — perhaps with the tale contained in that book which the poet received from Count Philip of Flanders, and which inspired him to write his Perce,val. In Peredur there is no Grail at all, but in its place a head carried on a salver, which has the same power of sustaining life as the Holy Grail, and as the head of Bran in that other Welsh tale of Branwen. Whatever Chretien might have revealed about the nature of the Grail had he lived, we have seen that Robert de Boron made it a most holy object.
