In March, 1860, Dr. Ashley was induced to accept a call to St. Paul's Church, Milwaukee, the mother church of the city and diocese. For several years he was Dean of the Milwaukee Convocation. His rectorship of St. Paul's ended in July, 1876, and exceeded in length of time the combined rectorships /& 'y^-^^r ASHLEY GENEALOGY. 229 of all his predecessors. For a year, beginning October, 1876, Dr. Ashley was curate of St. Mary's Church, Somerstown, London, England. On his return from abroad he was ...made Canon of All Saints Cathedral, Milwaukee, a position he held until his death, doing duty in the Cathedral and in vacant parishes as need required. Up to his last illness he was ever ready to fulfil his ministry, and during his notably active and laborious ministry of fifty-four years it is said that for hardly one Sunday had he been disabled from duty. Dr. Ashley held the position of a trustee of the General Theological Seminary for about thirty years, and for an equal period was a trustee of Racine College.
