Ilis death is recorded on a cross in the crowded little burial-ground in Ireland Island, Ber- mudas, with the fitting legend, " In the midst of life we are in death." On Wednesday, the 26th of March, we sounded (Station XXV.) in lat. 19° 41' N., long. 65° T W., nearly 90 miles north of St. Thomas, in 3875 fathoms. The bottom brought up in Digitized by LjOOQIC 262 TBE ATLANTIC.
[CHAP. nr.
the " Hydra " tube was reddish mud, containing, however, a con- siderable quantity of carbonate of lime. The
... color and compo- sition of the mud were not uniform. The upper layer — that which had been forced farthest into the tube — was much red- der than that which was nearest the mouth of the tube, and which had consequently come from a greater depth.
This is a phenomenon with which we are now very famil- iar, particularly among the red clays from great depths. It seems to be due to some deoxidizing process taking place slowly, and consequently visibly affecting only those deeper layers which have beeii deposited for a considerable length of time.
