112 The Atom of the two orbits, is a very simple expression, namely : '■ Fr = le^Mi - (- ^ sin a + Z cos ay^r''' . (196) This denotes the force that the second electron exerts upon the first. The ^2 is the velocity of the second electron and e is the charge, r is the distance between the centers of the orbits supposed to be fixed and constant.
The angle a is the angle between the directions of their axes of revolution, and the X and Z a...re the direction cosines defining the position of the center of the orbit of the second electron with reference to a set of rectangular axes, i, j, and k, through the center of the orbit of the first electron.
It is to be remarked first that the velocity of the first electron does not appear in this equation at all.
That is to say, the force upon the first electron is, ac- cording to this result, entirely independent of its own velocity, and it does not matter what it is doing. As a direct result of this it may be shown that the force upon the first electron due to the second one may be entirely different from the force exerted upon the second due to the first.
