To obviate the necessity of my soldiers "being obliged to carry their knapsacks such a long distance, I purchased a wagon, chains, and three yoke of oxen, in which their knapsacks were carefully packed, with no other trouble to themselves than to act the part of teamsters to them. I took a fine pony with me, which I rode, or lent (as seeming exigencies required) to the lame and weary soldiers who were liable to be left behind a place of safety or relief. Our march with an ox-team train was of n...ecessity slow and tedious, and made more so by the unfavorable circumstances that surrounded us, as at that time there were no white settlements in the State of Kansas, and roving bands of Indians infested the road for the greater part of the distance. I will not attempt to describe the lands through which we passed on our march, but will state some of the most inter- esting incidents connected with it. A short time before we commenced our march, Lieutenant Love, of the United States army, had left Fort Leavenworth with a company of dragoons to go to Santa ¥6, and having a fine-looking company of men, and more confidence than experience, advanced rapidly into the prairies until he came to a train in the road owrjed by a citizen whose teams a band of Indians had just driven off, when, instead of immediately pursuing them with his whole force, in person, he divided his company and sent a sergeant with a detachment in pursuit, while he remained at camp.
