At first, and for some years, the opportunities for communicating with the rest of the world, especially with friends in America, were irregular, and, at best, few and far between. At length, how- ever, mail facilities became regular and frequent, and those parts of the Colony which came to be the abode of civilized and Christian people from abroad, took on the garb and character of the lands from which their occupants came ; and among or through them one could find or get about every good thin...g that coald be had in any part of the world. The natives, too, who embraced the gospel, came gradually to be like the best of other lands and colors. Some of the numerous and radical changes which have been coming over this people, the Zulus of Natal, and, indeed, over all Africa, during the half century that dates from Mr. Grout's going to that dark land, in 1846, are briefly noted in a paper he wrote in 1892, for the New York Observer, called "Then and Now; or a Reminiscence, a Contrast, and a Call;" in a few ex- tracts from which, he says: "Some fifty years ago I made choice of Africa as afield for mission work.
