It is interesting to know that he arrayed him- self with Mr. Giddings in favor of abolishing slavery in the District of Columbia. Mr. Gid- dings little suspected that the plain member from Illinois, whose co-operation he had secured, was to be the instrument under Providence of abolishing slavery, not only in the District of Columbia, but throughout the land.
