But the following extracts from correspondence throw light upon the subject. In a letter dated October 13, 1862, addressed to Captain Benjamin Huger, General Mahone says : "About 1 o'clock that night [he means 1 a. m. June 1] I received an order from General Huger directing me to move at daylight for the battle-field of ' Seven Pines ' where I would re- port to Major-General D. H. Hill. In accordance with this order the brigade moved and reported to General Hill about 7 a. m., June 1, or perhap...s earlier, at the same time General Pickett's FIGHTING, JUNE 1. 119 brigade reported upon the field. The brigade [Mahone's] was in a few moments thereafter, thrown into action, a report upon wliich General Huger has." No trace of that report is found. In a letter dated December 14, 1885, addressed to me, Gen- eral Mahone says that at the time of the battle of Seven Pines two regiments of his brigade " had been temporarily detached leaving with him only the Twelfth and Forty-first Virginia and the Third Alabama Regiments." After stating that his brigade relieved that of General Eodes, on the Charles City road.
