Of such a character are the following specimens : " Quite riiinM and bankrupt, rcduc'd to a farthing;, By making too much of a very small garden. " ******* " But you, forsooth, your all ...must squander, On that poor spot called Dcluille, yonder. " Tickell, who has been justly said to " hold a distinguished rank among the minor poets of his country, " came to Ireland, as assistant to Addison, when that eminent person was employed as secretary to the Earl of Sunderland, in 1714. His stay, on that occasion, was prol)ably of short continuance 3 but, in 1725, he was advanced to the situation of secretary to the lords justices of Ireland, and in the following year he entered into a matri- monial connection at Dublin.
