William Simpson, we shall remember, went naked in ritual fashion through both Universities.^ But the chief reason for this coarse horse-play was the same as that which caused the craftsmen of Diana at Ephesus to rise against Paul — fear that their craft was in danger. The Quakers were un- sparing in their denunciations of University learning, and the hot-headed champions of established religion proceeded, in the spirit of Hudibras, to prove their doctrine orthodox By apostolic blows and knocks.
