What reading level is The Betrothed book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
These men maintained a constant and watchful guard, commanded bythe steward, but under the eye of Father Aldrovand, who, besidesdischarging his ecclesiastical functions, was at times pleased toshow some sparkles of his ancient military education. Whilst this garrison afforded security against any sudden attempton the part of the Welsh to surprise the castle, a strong body offorces were disposed within a few miles of the Garde Doloureuse, ready, on the least alarm, to advance to defend the place... againstany more numerous body of invaders, who, undeterred by the fate ofGwenwyn, might have the hardihood to form a regular siege. Tothis band, which, under the eye of Damian de Lacy himself, waskept in constant readiness for action, could be added on occasionall the military force of the Marches, comprising numerous bodiesof Flemings, and other foreigners, who held their establishmentsby military tenure. While the fortress was thus secure from hostile violence, the lifeof its inmates was so unvaried and simple, as might have excusedyouth and beauty for wishing for variety, even at the expense ofsome danger.
