A leafless tree, with lopped branches, stands to the left, while from the right margin of the picture apparently extend the shafts of three, possibly four, spears or lances adorned with pennants, either in general indicat ng the approach of the arxor bearers, or the idea of the three spears (verse 14) thrust by Joab himself and referred to in the explanation which fol- lows.
