In Febniary, 1910, Dr. Julius Goebel, Professor in the Uni- versity of Illinois, offered to the Historical Commission for publication two unpublished versions of Christopher de Graf- fenried's account of the planting of his German and Swiss colony in North Carolina in 1710, and of the founding of New Bern. These manuscripts, one in
... French, the other in German, were discovered by Dr. Goebel in Europe, and differ in many respects from the account published in Volume I of the Colonial Records of North Carolina. Dr. Goebel wrote as follows in re- gard to his versions : 1. There are in my versions about 86 closely written pages (foolscap, 14x9) of material not given in your Records. This does not include the valuable maps, picture and plans of New Bern.
2. This new, unpublished material contains, among other things— a. Contract between Ludwig Michel and Chr.
