Hammill was born in Preston, Ontario, Canada, on October 4, 1865. His parents are Thomas and Jane Hammill. He was educated in the public schools and went to work when he was 14. In 1899 Mr. Hammill went in- to the coal business, as salesman with the Henderson Coal Company of Pittsburgh ; he then took a position in charge of the Marine Coal Company, and in 1905 Mr. Hammill was made General Manager of Sales of the Monongahela Consolidated Coal and Coke Company. His next position was with the Pitt...sburgh Terminal Railroad and Coal Company as sales manager, in 1909. In 1912 he went into the business for himself, becoming president of the B. S. Hammill Coal Company, Inc. He was also elected president of the Meadow Lands Coal Company. Mr. Hammill actively manages both of these companies.

While it is true that no industry has been so conducive to making millionaires as the steel industry, none of those who succeeded in raising themselves from the ranks be- came prominent in the industry without hard work.
