Unfortunately, he was already under con- tract... to remain in Vienna, and, from the printed accounts of the matter, it appears to have been inevitable that one agreement or the other must J 73 BOSTON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA be broken. It is no wonder that the opposition to his leaving Vienna was strong. The Emperor himself took part in it, with the result that it became necessary to look elsewhere for the new director. Emil Paur, born August 29, 1855, at Czernowitz, Bukowina, was established in Leip- zig as the successor of Arthur Nikisch at the Stadt Theater.
