The last navigator before Drake to attempt the pas sage from the Atlantic side was one Simon de Alca- zova, a Portuguese serving the King of Spain. He succeeded only in penetrating it some "twenty-five or thirty leagues, " when he was forced to return; and afterward he was murdered by his men in mutiny. This was in the year 1535. Of the earlier attempts, following Magellan's feat, two only had been success ful, and both ended tragically.
