But fortunately for the church of England, of which he afterwards became an illuftrious prelate, Mr. Latimer became acquainted with Mr. 1 homas Bilney ; who having entertained favourable fenti- mentsof Latimerfrom his moraichara&er, in which alone there was at that tin. Eany limilarity between them, conceived in opinion, that by communicat- ing 192 HUGH L AT I ME R, ing to him the obfervations he had long made on the fcandalous lives of the monks and the Romifh clergy, and comparing them with the exemplary conduct of the reformers, he might induce Larimer to think more favourably of their writings and opinions.
