It was a terrible environment for a romantically pure young girl to find herself in. Still only seventeen years old, poor Fanny was desperate to get out of the misery, to escape forever the crumbling tenements, the violence and drunkenness, the filth, squalor and terminally imbecilic populace that perpetually wandered like shell-shocked shell-suited zombies from bleak benefit office to inane daytime television sets and back again in mindless hopeless loops. She was a sweet fairy; they were scum.
