To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
In the year 1609 Henry Hudson, an Englishman in the service of the Dutch, had founded a small colony on the river that bears his name, and Argall, declaring their settlement an encroachment on Virginia, forced them to submit to the authority of the English. But though the French tamely suffered this indignity, the Hollanders were in no mind to do so, but, sending for reinforcements, presently recaptured their settlement. In 1 61 7 Argall, who had in the mean time been to England, was appointed ...Governor of Virginia. During Deputy Yardley's term of office the colony had prospered backwards rather than forwards. Instead of following up the wise measures of Governor Dale, he allowed the profit on tobacco to tempt him to neglect the growing of corn. For James I., notwith- standing his antipathy to the Indian weed, which he held to be pernicious to men's morals, as well as to their health, had given the colonists permission to enter it in England, while he inhibited all importation of it from Spain.
