We see it openly charged, that the United States Sen- ate has passed under the control of a major- ity whose interests or prejudices favor a view of the relations of the land-grant roads to the Government which is in opposition to what is conceived to be the natural and le- gitimate exp...ression of those relations as em- bodied in the Thurman Bill. The approval of the nomination of a Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States has recently been opposed on account of the views of the can- didate on this question, and his opinions on the subject have furnished many an earnest leader for the columns of our newspapers. Since his confirmation, which was only secur- ed by the majority of a single vote, mass- meetings have been held for the purpose of denouncing it. The pages of the Congress- ional Record bear further witness to the at- tention which the subject attracts to itself at Washington.
