Large jars and unbroken pot- tery with beads and other ornaments are found when a ruin is excavated.
[101] THE CALL OF THE MOUNTAINS There are primitive stone mills and metates, re- sembling stone washboards, on which the little brown maidens ground the corn; crude fireplaces where it was cooked, and blackened ceilings in these caves which tell us of a vanished race. Corn cobs and squash stems lying in the dust of centuries are plentiful, as are the bones and feathers of turkeys.
