Be it remembered that the abor- tive rising at Lichtenburg, and the traitorous doings at Potchefstroom were as yet a profound secret to 99 per cent, of the public. The taunts of the rebel- liously inclined always were : " What can you Brit- ishers do ? You haven't any rifles, and we have got thousands, and can get thousands more. " Of course, the Government knew more than the public, and that knowledge led them to ask for 7, 000 volunteers for immediate enlistment.
