Henry J. Richter was consecrated as its first Bishop on April 22, 1883. The first Bishop of Grand Rapids was born at Neuen- kirchen, Duchy of Oldenburg, Germany, on April 9, 1838, came to the United States in 1854 and settled at Cincinnati. He entered Saint Paul's school in that city, after which he spent five years at Bardstown and Mount Saint Mary's of the West. He was sent to Rome in 1860; five years later received a Doctorate in Divinity, and on June 10, 1865, he was ordained to the priesthood.
