There being no other alternative, they plunged in and swam their horses over, riding into town about "used up. " Judge Lockwood, who had long been in delicate health, feared that the exposures of this trip might be fatal, but strange to relate, OFFICIAL CELEBRATIONS 285 he suffered no evil consequences, thereafter enjoying better health than he had for years.
