Rupert, on his way to York, dispatched a message to Montrose to join him there. In spite of his rapidity of motion, he failed to reach the Prince till the battle had been lost and won, which would almost seem to prove that Rupert fought Marston Moor on the impulse of the moment. With the Scottish enterprise ever hi mind, Montrose begged one thousand men of Rupert, who at first agreed, but next morning withdrew his promise ; every man was necessary to secure his own retreat to Wales. Montrose no...w realized that he must stand alone or give up his hope of raising Scotland. To make his way thither with his present following would be madness, yet he sent two of his men to spy out the land. They returned with the information that 18 274 THE CHAMPIONS OF THE CROWN there was no news of the Irish contingent, and that the Covenant was supreme. Montrose apparently resigned himself to the inevitable, and set out on his return to Oxford. Nothing was, however, further from his thoughts than to return with his purpose unaccomplished, nay, even unattempted.
