The prime requisite is the presence of two amino groups which offer themselves to a double diazotization, and many substances possessing among their various side groups the two amino groups are readily available for initial substances of the more complex tetrazo dyes. Diamino stilbene disulphonic acid is an example of such a class of substances. The composition is shown below: HO. S SO ; H Diamino stilbene disulpho acid It resembles in its configuration benzidine; indeed if a molecule of benzid...ine is imagined to be cut in half and the two carbon and hydrogen atoms thrust between the benzene rings, a molecule of stilbene would be formed. In preparing this substance p-nitrotoluene is treated with fuming sulphuric acid and a sulpho group is introduced, forming p-nitrotoluene sulpho acid. This product on boiling with caustic potash yields azoxystilbene disulpho acid, v^inc dust is then added to the alkaline solution setting free nas- cent hydrogen, which reduces it and decolorizes it, forming diamono stilbene disulpho acid.
