What reading level is The Chiltern Hundreds book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
It lies nestling down between two hills. On that to the south stands West Wycombe House. The house itself was built by Sir Francis Dashwood, and enlarged by his son, Lord Le Despencer, of Medraenham Abbey fame. The park is very pretty, running down the sides of the hill, and the grounds were laid out by that skilled landscape-gardener, Bepton. On the opposite hill is the church, which was also built by Sir Francis Dashwood. It replaced an ancient one of which only the lower portion of the tower... remains. Its date is 1763, and it is a curious example of the style of that period. It is what is commonly called classical in design, and the fittings are very remarkable. Mahogany chairs serve for pulpit and reading-desk, and the font is a bronze basin on a tripod. It is no longer used for service in the winter, however, as there is a modern church, much more accessible, down in the village below. In front of the church is a large mausoleum, an hexagonal building, open to the sky in the centre.
