There are many concrete instances gen- erally recognized by the leaders in the rural- life movement wherein religion may be of great service to present-day agricultural life, and the number of them will grow by leaps and bounds with the increased attention that is given to the subject. Religious institutions in the country com- munities derive their support from the profits of agriculture. Usually, the decline of agri- 114 THE MESSAGE OF RELIGION culture in any community is accompanied by the d...ecline of the country church. The sup- port of rural religious institutions must come from the profits of husbandry, and, other things equal, the greater those profits, the greater will be the free offerings con- tributed to them by a grateful people. It is the duty of the church to encourage and assist the farmer in his work. This does not mean that the country church should go into the business of farming, or into agricul- tural teaching, but it should furnish the in- spiration, the encouragement and the vision for better things, agriculturally speaking.
