It was wholly, like Stoicism, a moral discipline, with a theoiy of the universe which could be brought forward, when necessaiy, to justify and explain it. The complete ascetic was called Bhixu, that is literally, beggar, for he lived by alms. For him the Vedas and entire ceremonial system of the Brahmans had ceased to have any significance; and if he did not explicitly deny the existence of the Brahmanic gods, he fdt no call to wo...rship them, for were not they also, like men, subject to the limiutbns which Being imposes, and without the power to ddiver othei^ The chief duties of the monk were meditation and purity of heart, and he was expected to distinguish himsdf fh>m other men by greater inwardness, humility, and patience.
It is well known how great was the success whkdi this rdigion at first met with in India. Its hostility to caste is a feature which has distinguished many other rdigious revivals in that countiy, and, perhaps, counted for less in its earlier Digitized by VjOOQIC 16 THE CHURCH OF THIBET successes than is generally supposed.* The emancipation which it promised from the burdensome round of sacrifice, and the oppressions of a priesthood whose sdfish aims were only thinly disguised by professions of sanctity and detachment from mundane interests, must have been welcome to thousands.
