Their symbols were adopted as signs of the zodiac, and the arrangement is referred to, in what have been called the Assyrian Creation Tablets : — He prepared the twin mansions of the great gods ; He fixed the stars, even the twin stars to correspond with them; He ordained the year, appointing the signs of the zodiac over it; For each of the twelve months he fixed three stars, from the day when the year issues forth to the close ; He founded the station of Nibir, the god of the ferry-boat, that none might go astray and err ; He set the stations of Bel and Ea along with him ; He opened great gates on both sides ; He made strong the bolt on the left and on the right ; In the midst thereof he fixed the zenith ; The moon-god he caused to shine forth, the night he entrusted to him, etc.
