(See Appendix. ) For this reason, and also because the laws of Portugal, while tolerant of the religious services of foreigners, do not permit any Portuguese subject to hold church services other than those of the Church of Rome, it is expedient that the missions should know who are and who are not to be reckoned Portuguese subjects; and it is desirable 22 NOTES ON SOUTH-EASTERN AFEICA.
