To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
We were told when it was being built that we should see an Elinor cross carried out, an old English Gothic design adapted to the circumstances and constructed with the building resources of the nineteenth century. When we saw it, we could not but know it was be- yond criticism. It was impossible for the greatest ad- mirer of English architecture to defend a building so wholly un-English both in taste and execution, and one which would not stand for five minutes but for some concealed engineerin...g in cast iron. Another architect who disappointed the admirers of the revived Gothic was Waterhouse. The great build- ings that dominate Manchester do not belong to our subject, but we have in the Natural History Museum at South Kensington and in the vast ruddy structure which occupies the old site of Fumival's Inn, Holbom, specimens of what this architect could do in a style to which it would be difficult to put a name. It is not French or German or even Italian Gothic. Nor does it grow out of a study of any particular phase or period of English Gothic.
