The elements were communi- cated by Buckhardt, in a letter to Olbers, and have only recently appeared in print, through the in- strumentality of Dr. D' Arrest. 1818. (l) Discovered by Pons, on December 26th, 1817, but the perihelion passage occurred in the following year; it was considered by Pons the faintest of all the comets he had found. It was seen at Bremen till May 1st. 1818. (ii.) Discovered by Pons, on November 29th, in Hydra; and by Bessel, on December 22nd, in Cygnus, without knowled...ge of the previous dis- covery. It moved very rapidly, and approached pretty near the earth. Rosenberger computed a hyperbolic orbit. 1819. (i.) A memorable appearance of the Comet o/Encke, when its periodicity was detected, and since which its returns have been regularly predicted. It was discovered by Pons, on the 26th of November, 1818, but the perihelion did not take place till the end of January in the following year. 1819. (ii.) The Great Comet. Discovered in various parts of Europe, on the 1st and 2nd of July, having made its appearance rather suddenly above the north-west horizon, in the constellation Lynx.
