.... Little children, nine and ten years old, were tried and convicted just like a man of forty. If they were sentenced they were sent to the Bridewell or to Pontine prisons, where the worst criminals are kept. They were picked up on the streets by the Policeman for some supposed offense and put into the Police Station for the night, little or no care being taken as to who was in the same cell with them. Of course the little fel- lows were defiant and only too ready to learn all the evil the older men around them chose to teach them.
