15 16, Selim met the Mameluke army near Aleppo, where he administered a terrible defeat in which the Mameluke Sultan was killed. The Turks soon mastered Syria and advanced to Gaza. Here the Mamelukes made another attempt to stop their advance, but without success. The final battle was fought near Cairo, conse- quent upon which Egypt, and with it also Palestine and Syria, passed under the Ottoman Porte. The Mamelukes chose their own leader, reduced the Turkish garrison at Cairo, and sent the Pasha back to the Porte.
