From this time (161 6) on for over a score of years but little from the Brownists on our subject has been preserved to us. 56 CONTEST FOR LIBERTY OF CONSCIENCE During the early part of the reign of Charles I. , up to his break with Parliament, the state was in a great political ferment.^t The contest between the Parliament and the king became all-absorb- ing. Only just before this break did this phase of religious discussion become prominent again. In 1641 "The Humble Petition of the Brownists"... was addressed to the Parliament. It presents evidence of a great temporary change of thought among at least some of the Independents. Their first expression for liberty of conscience comes to light in this (B. M. , E. 178 (10), pp. 3 f. ). Who the particular author or authors of this may have been does not appear, nor was the opinion herein expressed maintained. Yet it still deserves a full presentation. It is a remarkable protestation of Christian charity to come to us from the first half of the seventeenth century.
