Richard Henry Stoddard. He was born at Hingham, Massachusetts, in July, 1825. His educational advantages were very meager; he lost his father in early youth, and for several years thereafter worked in an iron foundry in the city of New Yoi"k; afterward held a position in the custom-house; began to contribute to the periodicals of the day in 1848; married Eliza- beth Drew, a poetess of considerable fame, in 1852; has pub-* lished numerous volumes of both prose and poetry; was the editor of the Aldine, the leading art journal of America for sev- eral years.
