The triple tail was a visible solar analy- sis of cometary matter. " Her summary of the learning on the subject of cometary tail formation is very clear: "It is now PLANETARY MATTER^- COMETS. 27 nearly a quarter of a century since M. Bredichin, di- rector of the Moscow Observatory, directed his atten- tion to these curious phenomena. His persistent in- quiries on the subject, however, date from the appear- ance of Coggia's comet in 1874. On computing the value of the repulsive force exerted in ...the formation of its tail, and comparing it with the values of the same force arrived at by him in 1862 for some other con- spicuous comets, it struck him that the numbers repre- senting them fell into three well-defined classes. ' I sus- pect, ' he wrote in 1877, ' that comets are divisible into groups, for each of which the repulsive force is the same. ' This idea was confirmed on fuller investiga- tion. In 1882 the appendages of 36 well-observed comets had been reconstructed theoretically, without a single exception being met with to the rule of the three types.
