According to the census, 302 THE COST OF MINING the amount of argentiferous ore treated in 1904 was 2,271,724 tons, which yielded an average of 0.42 oz. gold, 16.53 oz. silver, 198 lb. lead, and 22.72 lb. copper. It is to be remarked that the figures of the census relate only to ore smelted in the United States, while my previous figures have included the ore smelted both in the United States and in Mexico. Moreover, the latter figures are for contents of the ore purchased, while the census figures are for yield of the ore.
